Ask a Question
Wedding Timeline?

First of all, I hope all of you are enjoying your 4th of July weekend:) I don't know how the weather is where you girls are at, but right now here in Iowa it's about 85 degrees with practically no humidity, which is a rarity in Iowa! I should be outside enjoying the weather! I will tonight because we are grilling out just the FH and I:)

So, I was putting together my timeline for photographer, DJ, and bridal party! I think I have what I want, but I'm not quite for sure of what to do first at the reception. Maybe you girls can help me out with this like you always do:)

We decided to take all of our pictures before the ceremony because almost all of our guests are coming in from out of town. So, we didn't want to make them wait around for us to get finished with pictures before they could enjoy the reception!

This is what I have planned for what the day will look like:
10:00 am – 10:25 - Getting ready photos

10:30am – 10:45/11:00 - First Look and Bride and Groom Pictures
Reception Hall by the Pavilion and Pond

10:45 – 11:15 – Wedding Party Pictures by the Pavilion

11:25 – 11:50/12:00 Take Wedding Party Pictures / Bride and Groom Pictures with parasols??? This will be at a historical building in the town where our reception will be.

12:05 – 12:25 – Wedding Party Pictures/ Bride and Groom Pics

12:40 – 2:15 – Church Pictures

3:00-3:30/3:45 – Ceremony

3:45 - Thank our guests for coming to the ceremony:)

4:00/4:15 – 5:00 – The wedding party will get in the limo and possibly go to a couple local bars

5:15 - Wedding Party entrance into the reception hall.

5:30 - Cake Cutting Pictures???

5:45 - Toasts???

6:00 - Dinner and Slideshow

7:00/7:15 - (depends how long it takes everyone to eat) - first dance

7:15 - First Dance/Father, Daughter Dance, Mother, Son Dance, Wedding Party dance

7:45 - Dancing for all:)

8:15 - Garter Toss

8:25 - Bouquet Toss

8:30 - Dancing the night away:)

What do you think about this timeline? The things that I didn't know about were the cake cutting, toasts, garter toss, and bouquet toss times? Please let me know if you think this sounds like it would work.

The pictures that I have posted are the wedding timelines that I think I'm going to give to my bridal party:) Have you made your own timelines and given it to the bridal party? I just think that this would help things go smoothly and everyone will know where to be when!

Thanks again girls! Enjoy your 4th of July:)

Question: If you don't want dead space after your ceremony for your guests how come you and the wedding party will be going somewhere else for an hour-ish?
Just a suggestion: I personally would want cakes after dinner.
If you don't want a big gap for your ceremony stuff so that elders don't miss out I would suggest just having your things closer together.
Good luck!

True, very true!  We didn't want them to wait for 3 hours afterwards for the pics and everything.  We probably won't be gone for quite that long, as I have listed above, it's kinda just a guess. It just depends on how long the receiving line takes too!  That could be quicker than what we think it will take.  We wanted to at least stop at one place to get a drink or two, especially since we paid about $500 for our transportation.

See about the cake thing, I wanted my photographer to make sure that she take the cake pics right away before she left, but I could ask her if she is staying until after the dinner and things like that.  It would be nice to get in the cake cutting, first dance, and toasts for sure in before she left:)  I might just change the cake cutting time then if the photographer will be there for that long:)  Thanks!!!

I think your timeline sounds great. A couple weddings I have been going to I see them cutting the cake as soon as they come in. It makes sense so its cut and ready to serve for desert after dinner. That is what I will be doing.

That's kinda what I was thinking sweetpea13 :)  That way the guests could have their cake right away!  I just wanted to check and see what other brides were doing!  It sounds like quite a few may do it that way.

You could do a 'mock' cake cutting, where you just pose so that you can have your photographer there to take those pictures,Have the DJ explain this to the guests so they get whats going on.. I personally have never been to a wedding where they did this, but I think it makes sense, so it's already cut and ready to serve after dinner :-) My timeline is a little non-traditional so I think whatever works for you guys is all that matters

Did you make the same time line for the vendors? I think I want to make separate ones for the girls, guys and vendors. I want the girls to have a whole wedding day timeline whereas the vendors only have the actual WEDDING timeline. How are you making yours?

Laurie - I was going to get timelines if needed, for the photographer she would probably have the whole day of the wedding timeline since she'll be there the whole day. Then the DJ will just have from the reception on, and the girls will have a little different one from the guys because the girls will take a littel longer to get ready:)  So, yes I am giving everyone a different schedule depending on what she/he is doing that day!

I'm working on something on Power Point and it's a little more stressful then I thought.. and the fact that I need to make different ones is confusing me because I'm not sure where to start lol

Laurie did you happen to check out weddingbee.com?  That's where I got my template from one of the girls!  I changed some things around on mine and it was pretty easy once I got the template.  It's just a suggestion, but it may make things go a little quicker for you:)

I was totally not in charge of my itinerary  :))
My hubby made an entire itinerary by himself. And we sent it to all the parties including the vendors, it was very detailed, and had notes and even my smoking breaks :))
My understanding is that itinerary is an outline for the evening, and if notes for particular vendors are included in there, you don't have to make separate itineraries for the vendors.
Yours seems fine except for I don't know if 1hr or 1hr15m is enough for dinner.
Cake cutting time is fine I think. I've seen it being cut at different times, whatever works best for you is fine.

I am doing the first dance and cake cutting as soon as we enter the reception. I went to my cousins wedding where they did that. Think it's gets the formalities out of the way and save on photographer costs. Only thing I am worried about is the firs dance is meant to get people on the dance floor.

The only suggestion I would have is also the gap. However it's your wedding and people do expect to wait

yuandmi - Wow!  That was great of your husband to do that for you!  I bet that helped relieve some of the stress off of you:)  For the dinner part, I didn't know either, I had just taken a guess!  Your probably right though maybe I should adjust that!

missnatasha - That's a good way to look at it too, just to get those formalitlies out of the way and you don't have to worry about it as much and making sure you get everything in before the end of the night:)  FH and I were talking about just drinking in the limo and then quickly going to the reception hall!  Still haven't decided yet though!

Laurie - I can email you one that I was emailed through another girl on weddingbee.com if you want:)  Just let me know!

Thank you girls for all of your suggestions!  This truly helps me with figuring everything out:)  You guys are the best!
