Wedding Cake

How much is too much?

(This is another long post, so I apologize in advance. First is my venting/rant, and last is my question.)

So I don't want to give out too many details, because my family and friends frequent my blog postings, but our budget is a good size. With that said, I'm still cutting back on certain things, so I have a dilemma.

I feel like just because a photographer (for example) starts his basic package at 5,000, doesn't mean I have to pay that. Regardless of my budget, or any other brides budget.

And I understand that you get what you pay for. A friend of mine went with a young freelance photographer, and her pictures looked like ghetto trash. All fading circles around them, they looked like they were edited with a cheap photoshop program, with cheap frames, etc. Terrible. And keep in mind, that's the only account of your wedding day that you have! So sad.

But If I found an awesome photographer, with beautiful reviews, and a gorgeous portfolio, that charges 2500 for the same package, I'm gonna go with him. I just think that its logical to take the time to keep searching.

NOW (sorry about the rant)
I went to a cake tasting today. The bakery does AMAZING work. I mean the lady paints Van Gough paintings on CAKES!! (see left) and she did the Corpse Bride too!! Shes so awesome.

So we went. The cake is really good! and her work is beyond words. The problem is her price... 7.50 a serving. :\ I have almost 200 people coming. That's $1500 for..a CAKE.

My FH says, "well we're paying thousands for a photographer, tens of thousands for a venue, and crazy dough for a DJ, whats another 1500??"

My question to all of my WBC family IS:
Is the cake something I can look around for? Or is it something that if I want a certain quality, I'm going to have to bite the bullet and just pay it?

It just seems like SOO much money for something that no one even eats!!

Ok that was my dilemma too because we had already spent a ton of money through out this whole wedding so what i did was go to my local bakery tell them that i want square cakes but i dont want them decorated or stacked because i have someone in the family that can decorate and stack them for me (my mom) and for them to white ice and smooth the cake out and not decorate and stack them they are only charging me $170.00 which is a good deal lol so my advice to you if you have someone in the family that can decorate and stack and has all the material for your cake i would go with that unless you want to have the lady decorate and do all of it then you might want to go somewhere else because that is a lot of money for a cake hope i could help and wishing the best for you

Wow that is a lot for a cake, but if it's that gourmet and decadent then that sounds about right for the price. If you don't want to spend that much you may want to shop around. There are ways of being unique and having a delicious and beautiful cake. We are doing cake pops (I have a blog about it) and it's very elegant and fun. We are only paying $139 for it with a lovely display. It's something different and non traditional but it's perfect for our wedding and budget. I wish the best for you!

Tiffany- Wow thats an awesome idea!!! I'll have to ask around and see if I have someone I know who can stack cakes!!! Thanks for sharing!!
Johnson- It is alot for cake :\ but where I live, there isn't alot  of options for a cheaper version of a cake. which totally sucks.  The cake pop idea sounds adorable!!!! Maybe I'll go with something cheaper like cupcake/cake combo, or another alternative. Thanks so much for the advice!!

$1,500 really isn't too bad when you consider the artistry that goes into creating the masterpieces that they call cake.
However, There are many other options you can look at before dropping that much money on a cake.
I checked with our local grocery stores and wholesale warehouses like Publix, BJs, Sams Clubs, etc before I settled on using an independent person (lady at church) to make our cake. they all make wedding cakes. My second choice would have been Publix because their cakes are delicious and the prices were about what I paid for my cake.
You can go simple and then add fresh flowers to the cake. Its basically up to you how much you want to invest and how much leg work you want to put into finding a great price.
