Attempt DIY floral

A little bit frustrated but quickly getting over it.
So I have been in contact with a florist via email, communication started over a month ago. I requested a quote for three bridesmaid bouquets and two corsages, for our mothers. The question about cost has been avoided and finally I was told that calla lilies are "the most expensive flower a bride could possibly want." but still no mention of even an estimate.
So after not getting a straight answer I decided to try this on my own, after all it can't be that hard.
All I want is a simple hand tied bouquet of calla lilies. So I went out to the grocery store late two nights ago in search for calla lilies, after visiting three stores I did not find any :( But I figured I could still practice making the bouquet, I bought some cheap $4 flowers, and I am very happy with the way the ribbon looks.
Now all I have to do is find someone that I can order calla lilies from so I can practice making the real thing.

calas aren't the most expensive. Orchids and peonies run a lot more, but they are pricey.
Hand tying a mum, like in your picture, is far easier than a calal lily though, i would actually check out some dollar stores/craft stories, see if you can find some cheapo ones, (who cares how ugly they may be, lol).

Get a feel for working with them before trying the real thing.

That way you can pull them apart, re-tie, pull apart, etc, without killing them off.

Calla lillies are expensive, depending on what time of year you are getting them. Of course I would love the most expensive flowers.. But certain Orchids I was told by my florist can run about $70 dollars per stem!!! and I agree with Kristah, if you are attempting to do them yourself mess around with the cheap dollar store ones first before you waste money on the ones you really want. Did you try to search online shops where you can buy loose flowers?

The florist sounds unprofessional, I want contact another, and still another after that to get the best quote.

im having a calla lily bouquet - 10 dark purple ones, and my bouquet is $95 total.  im also using orchids for my bouts and they are $5 each.  im also in a small town in southern ontario...

@kristah & laurie88, thank you I had not even considered getting artificial flowers to practice with thanks for that tip... Thankfully I have almost a year to get them perfect and find someone I can order the stems from at a decent price.
@pamnandy, $95 does not seem that outrageous, wish this florist had given me some estimate.  Thank you for giving me an idea of the cost.
