Wedding Music And Songs
Dilemma!

So I just got a text message from an old school friend who is a DJ at a local club here in my hometown. I had asked him about DJ'ing my wedding a couple months ago but never heard back from him. So I get a text message today that said

"Ill do you a favor, I have known you for a while and I want the experience so Ill just do it for you no charge. I want you to have a fun wedding the way you want it."

I don't even know what to say to that, as most of you know I rented the DJ in a box thing and already put my deposit down on that. I mean he has all his own equipment and everything. The ONLY thing that makes me hesitate is that, I wonder if he would get dressed up...and this would be the first wedding that he has done!! AHHHHHHH...really, I wouldn't mind having a DJ at my wedding, and my mom said all i need to do is tell him exactly what he needs to do. I don't want anyone to have to babysit him through the whole night...

Girls please help! Give me some input!

Did you have those same doubts when you asked him to do it a couple of months ago?  Some time peace of mind is worth the $$.

no I didn't have those doubts but seriously first time wedding, I want my guests to have a blast and not be like oh why is that DJ messing up!? And who knows he could be amazing at it...I think Ill have a meeting with my mom and him and just see what he says, see if he feels confident , and then go from there. Sounds good, if all else fails I still have my DJ in a box... :)

It doesn't seem like a dilemma to me! Let the man try! I'm giving my DJ a playlist and crossing my fingers...he's a coworker and only charging me $125.00!

I think you are taking a big risk. What if he comes very late? How reliable is he? You said it took him a who's to get back to you. I would be concern about letting do the wedding. My MOH's sister got married weeks ago and s DJ friend showed up one hour into the reception to set up his equipment. I heard that people had left before music started. My suggestion is to set clear expectations frm him starting with set up time and including your music list.

We had a court wedding three weeks ago. I did not want a court wedding - I wanted my big, beautiful church wedding with a dj and everything. What I got was my sister with an ipod and some tiny speakers - and it turned out AWESOME. My point is, the day is going to be beautiful and perfect whether you pay a ton for a super experienced DJ or if you get your friend to do it. My cousin's DJ was super late to her wedding and she freaked out - I told her, you can't control other people but you can control your reaction to them. If you got into your big day knowing it's going to be perfect and beautiful no matter what happens, it will be. I think saving the money and giving your friend a chance would be totally worth it. Just have a playlist ready (typed up and handed to them) and any really specific things you want him/her to say/do should be on that list as well. Then - let the good times roll and don't sweat the small stuff! That's just my personal opinion - whatever you chose will be great, I'm sure! Best of luck!

I really think you should give him a try, but since he is new to the biz I would give  him a lot of info about the direction you want him to take for the songs, announcements, level of involvement, etc.  In all reality your concerns seem like you are worried because he is inexperienced, which is a legitimate concern; however, with your DJ in a box you were going to have a friend take over that - so it'd kind of be the same thing.  Only your DJ friend has an interest and passion for DJ'n because he's trying to get into the biz.  If you just asked another friend to "man" your DJ box, they are really just there to celebrate and have fun at your wedding - no passion for DJ'n most likely.

I know you think I was being negative about your DJ in a box, and those weren't my intentions at all.  Girls post on this website to get advice that they can use and that is what I was trying to give, because I have info about professional advice in this area.  So I'm just trying to help out.  I'd much rather provide "thinking points" before your wedding than see a post after your wedding that says that your guests couldn't hear anything during the reception or the sound box blew a fuze.

If you want to send me an e-mail I'd be happy to send you a few lists that my FH uses for his wedding couples.  They include an event timeline, a guide on how to introduce your wedding party, a list of frequently played songs (for the Southern Illinois area), etc.  You can edit these as you wish and give them to your DJ to use since he probably doesn't have his own.

On another note, to ease your concerns, I'd keep the DJ box handy and if he doesnt' show you have a back-up!
