Congratulations President Obama
Congratulations United States Of America
Tonight, as I watch the Inauguration and the celebrations that follow... I, for the first time ever, personally feel like I'm a part of something bigger than myself.
Thank you President Obama, thank you for giving me the opportunity to feel like I can make a difference. It's a good feeling. |

The Proposal
My favorite person...
For those of you who actually know us... you may not know this...
At first when you meet Fady, you know right away he is an honest, caring understanding and sweet guy. What you may not see is how thoughtful and genuine he really is. I have never known anyone to be so kind and dedicated. Dedicated to his work, his family, his relationships and his God. The first time we saw each other was at church. I will never ever forget the exact moment I saw him... he walked out of the church towards me... I was actually shaking with nervousness... I could feel my heart pounding. Never, ever in my life had I experienced that just meeting someone. I instantly knew he was amazing. It’s hard to put words to the feeling... it just felt like home... it felt familiar... it felt safe... I felt loved. Before we meet, we had both had experienced enough challenging times to make us seem “older than our years.” Those times, although we were not together when going through them... somehow brought us together. We had more empathy and compassion for each other at that moment, than some people have in a lifetime. Fady is my best friend, my confidant, my supporter, my strength and my teacher. He taught me to be understanding and patient. And after almost 5 years of dating, he (finally) asked me to be his wife. He took the time and the thought to ask me at a place that has been so very special to me. It was my sanctuary, my safe place... the cove. The cove is a place I went as a child... growing up on the water you come to understand the water is a place of peace and cleansing. No matter what happened or what I did… no one would judge me… no one knew me… it is my place where I could just be. In the morning I meet Fady down at the cove, he was already there fishing or so I thought... After much persistence he convinced me to go metal detecting with him. He kept saying “we’ll find buried treasure.” And we did... buried under a rock was a tin box wrapped with fishing line, inside was a little black box. Before I could realize what was happening, he had taken the black box, got down on one knee and said “Sara Elizabeth Scherf, will you marry me?” After a few sobs I said yes. I look back on that day and I’m reminded all over again just how good it feels to be loved like that. Simple, honest and pure love. It wasn’t a fairy tale, it wasn’t perfect, it didn’t go exactly as planned... but it was real... honest and true. I will forever be grateful to have met my favorite person. |

Bridesmaid Dresses
Trying to decide...
I'm not the type of person who likes to tell people what to do. I like when we can all come to an agreement. (to all my employees who read this - don't laugh lol). So when it comes to bridesmaid dresses... well, i'm not the one wearing it! or paying for it! So, I will help... but it's not up to me : )
My side of the bridal party consists of: Maid of Honor - My Mom Bridesmaid - My best friend (Leanne) Bridesmaid - Fady's sister (and my friend) Val I've gone dress shopping with my Mom and Leanne... we are going to have a day when we can all get together and try dresses on soon : ) In the meantime... these are some of the possibilities... all from Davids Bridal. Remember: the dresses will all be Apple Red. |

Damask Finds!
These are some of my latest damask finds : ) I'm super excited about them!
"Love" word (red and black damask) 50% off at Hobby Lobby. It's in the Valentine's Day section. Silver and red damask lanterns - These were in the clearance section. They had a TON of different kinds, shapes and sizes. I decided on these 2 lantern style candle holders. They were originally $12 I paid $4! : ) I think I'm going to put one in each bathroom or each bar. Silver damask mirror tray - I bought these at Michaels for $7 (originally $17) They were in the Christmas clearance section. I bought 3 of them... Black and white damask photo board came from Hobby Lobby. It was 50% off (I paid $8). I think I'm going to use this at the entrance of guest book table. I'm not quite sure... any suggestions? Black and white table cloths from TJ Maxx. These are HUGE. I was first thinking I was going to use them on the head table, entrance table and cake table... but I think I'm going to make them into squares for each table to place under each centerpiece... what do you think? |

Centerpieces Finally Finished.... I think...?
This is a trial run of what my Bridesmaid (Leanne) and I saw at a bridal show we went to last fall. I can't find deep red Gerber daisies yet, I've been told they are a fall flower and won't be out in the stores until July/August. So, I bought a pale yellow just to get an idea of how they will look. I really like them.
Hobby Lobby is having a sale this week 50% off all floral and wall decor : ) I also bought a package of twigs. I know it seems silly buying sticks when I live in Michigan... but I live in Michigan... there's 2 feet of snow and ice on the ground! Not exactly the stick hunting season lol. Let me know what you think...? I'm pretty sure this is it : ) just remember: the daisies will be a deep red. Should I buy black glass stones for the bottom? or real stones? I'm not sure about the clear glass... |

Centerpiece Update
Thank You Michaels! I found the tall red (wine glass like) candle holder at Michaels for 80% off : ) (I paid 4.99 each). The pattern on the large holder matches the smaller one. I put the Damask table cloth under so I can see what it may look like. Before I purchase enough table cloths to make smaller squares for each table, I'm going to try solid solid black.
Imagine the tall bullet vase is full of branches. I'm not sure how I feel about the plate stand. I would have to make the table numbers taller, it sits too low and is hard to read. I think I could probably get away with just making the sign without the plate stand...? The plate stands are only a dollar at Dollar Tree. So price isn't the issue (for once! lol) I'm also undecided on the black pillar stand thingy... I don't know if it's necessary... I feel bad if I don't use it because it if really the only thing Fady has picked out lol. I know he won't be upset if we don't use it... lol opinions pllllease : ) Thanks to all the brides who respond with their input. I truly appreciate it! : ) |

Wedding Reception
We found the hall! Finally!
It's difficult trying to plan a wedding across the state. I can't imagine how couples do it interstate! We finally found the banquet hall, it's the first and only hall we visited. We heard of the hall from a friend who attended a wedding there. He said the food was good. We liked it because it is an Italian and Middle Eastern restaurant. I'm German and Italian, and Fady's family is from the Middle East. What are the chances we would find a restaurant that would cater to both cultures! The best part, it was in our price range (which was proving challenging at the beginning of our search). The hall is beautiful! I'm super excited.
Do you think we will need chair covers? I think the chairs are pretty by themselves. Maybe an organza bow? I'm not sure... To see a slideshow of pictures visit: www.ikesrestaurant.com |

Ask a Question
Help With Centerpieces!?!
Help! I'm having a horrible time trying to decide on centerpieces for the reception! I feel like I've spent way too much time on this one detail. We are paying for our wedding, so we are on a VERY strict budget.
I bought 20 bullet vases, they are 21" tall. I got them on Craigslist.com, all 20 for $100! : ) I found candles at Garden Ridge 75% off. So, I bought 21 (we will have 20 tables) very tall pillar candles and 21 shorter pillar candles. They were Christmas candles (all white, peppermint scented). I also "borrowed" some sand from the beach where Fady proposed (our wedding is in September, so it will not be a beach theme wedding... so I'm not sure I like the look). I also found some red damask-ish candle holders at Michaels for $2 each (another Christmas clearance sale). I have 25 of those... We tried branches for the first trial. It was VERY labor intensive, so i'm a little worried about how to get the massive bunches of branches to the reception and set up without making a mess... I'm sure we could figure it out. I need opinions! tell me what you think... what looks good, what looks bad.... any help would be greatly appreciated! |

DIY Wedding
Cookie Favors
The engagement party was a success! Everything went pretty smoothly. I really liked how the cookie favors turned out. I have Celiac disease, and my step mom has a gluten intolerance so we have to eat Gluten Free. I decided to do cookies (more economical than a gluten free cake). I had gluten free chocolate chip, gluten free double chocolate chip, & dairy free - gluten free oatmeal raisin for my step mom and myself. And regular macadamia nut, chocolate chunk, & oatmeal raisin cookies for everyone else. I printed the messages on card stock, and attached them to the packages with double sided tape. I used CD envelopes (ebay - $4 for 100).
Thanks to Martha Stewart : ) http://www.marthastewart.com/portal/site/mslo/menuitem.3a0656639de62ad593598e10d373a0a0/?vgnextoid=f5ef3a6f5c470110VgnVCM1000003d370a0aRCRD&rsc=cod_pi |

Ask a Question
Should I involve my dog?
I recently read an article about having your dog as your ring bearer or flower girl. I have to say - I love that idea! However, my fiance, does not. My dog is a shelter dog who was abused by her prior owner. She is a border collie mix, and the sweetest dog anyone could ask for. I have never had a dog of my own before, I adopted her when I moved to a new city far from anyone I knew. She is the best! I didn't have a clue about dogs or doggie behavior. She's smart by breed, but she's the most well behaved sweet tempered gentle dog I've ever seen. I have no idea how anyone could hurt a dog like Rosie, she's so good.
I made her a bandana to wear the day of our engagement party. I embroidered an "R" on the bottom corner. I think she looks too cute. Would you consider having your dog in your wedding ceremony? Is it too risky? Too much of a pain? Or is it worth it? |
